Before the family get-togethers, evening cookouts and days spent enjoying your landscape, you first need to plan, design and install your dream outdoor space. But where do you start? That can be a big question, especially if it’s the first landscape design project you’ve done at your home.
Luckily, the process doesn’t have to be confusing or mysterious, if you choose a landscaping company that is transparent and has the right experience.
Whether you want to install a paver patio, water feature, outdoor kitchen, retaining wall, colorful foliage or fire pit, these are the basic steps you can expect when you start the landscape design process.
Make a Plan
This is the time to bring all of your ideas to the table, ask questions (there are no bad ones), share your concerns and break down your budget.
You’ll start with a consultation between you (and any other decision-makers in your family) and a landscape architect. Let them know what you want from the project, and be ready to answer questions like these:
- How do you want to use the outdoor space?
- What style do you like (ex. contemporary, traditional, rustic)?
- Where would you like the design installed?
- What is your budget?
- What do you like or dislike about your current landscape?
After your first meeting, the architect will put together a detailed plan and budget document using all of the information you two discussed. From there, you’ll share any changes you have and give your approval for them to move ahead with the next step of the project.
Create the Landscape Design
Once you have the basics covered, you can get down to the fun stuff — your landscape design. The architect will present you with an initial drawing or digital design that brings your ideas to life.
You’ll be able to review the design, suggest changes, ask questions and make sure you’re happy with everything. Remember: Now is the time to make changes because they can cost you money and delay your completion date if you try to change something once installation has started. It’s a lot easier to change a paver color now than it will be when they’ve already been laid.
After your initial design meeting, the architect will then show you an updated version of the design for you to approve. If everything is good to go, they will have you sign off on the design and begin breaking ground on your project.
Start the Installation Process
You’re one step closer to enjoying your new outdoor features. The landscape team will do a walkthrough with you before they begin to ensure everything will be installed in the right place and you’re still good with the plan.
Depending on the type and size of your project, the crew will begin marking off the area and any utilities, clearing the site and preparing it for the installation process. They will then start bringing in any equipment, materials or foliage needed for the project.
Be prepared for your yard to look like a construction site while they are working, especially if you have a larger project. But, it will definitely be worth it once everything is finished.
Complete the Final Walkthrough
A good landscaping team doesn’t hit the road immediately after the project is complete. Instead, the project manager should walk with you through the space and ensure you’re satisfied with their work.
If everything looks great, the project is finished. But that doesn’t mean you should stop working on it altogether. All outdoor features require some level of maintenance over time, whether it’s resealing a patio or pruning plants. Ask the install company if they provide maintenance, if that’s not something you want to handle on your own.
